Are You Fulfilling Your Potential? How Big is Your FishBowl?
Apr 17, 2014Not reaching your potential? Are you swimming in the right sized fish bowl?
This is a metaphor for what place you currently are in your career. Are you pushing yourself to see who you can be or what you can accomplish in your job, sport or life?
I had an amazing conversation with my teammate and sport psychologist Dr.Bhrett McCabe (@drbhrettmccabe) about the fish bowl that our athlete’s choose to swim in.
We broke down this subject during our 1st episode of McCabe and The Coach on my Coach Glass Podcast.
Bhrett said that the human mind is like a goldfish in a fishbowl. A goldfish’s growth is based on the size of the tank it is living in.
If you put a goldfish in a large tank the goldfish will grow. If you throw it in a pond it will become a Koi fish.
Put it in the ocean and it will die….. because it is a freshwater fish folks!
You get the idea. Growth is based on the environment. I am constantly jumping from current tank to a larger tank because I love challenge and always strive to swim in new environments and experience new experiences. Some of you are a big fish in a small tank because you are afraid to step outside of your comfort zone.
That is fine but you will never truly fulfil your potential until the day you dare to swim with the sharks!
Yes you might get eaten but if you swim around enough and use all the lessons you learnt in the previous tank you might just survive, flourish and grow a fin! That is a fish joke by the way.
On the podcast Bhrett went deeper and dropped some of the techniques that he has used with some of the greatest athletes of our generation.
Now get off your tail fin and SWIM!
